Square Mile was founded in 2001 by a group of investors based in Hong Kong together with Michael Toogood who was returning to live in the UK after a 6 year period working as an investment banker in Singapore and Hong Kong. Michael’s experiences and difficulties in finding a reliable lettings agent to manage his own London property were a driver in his belief that there must be a better way.


After the establishment of the business it soon became clear that there are very few lettings agencies with sufficient critical mass to rise to the expectations of the professional residential property investor. In particular:


• Achievement of critical mass allows Square Mile to invest in the training and systems necessary to ensure the protection of client monies
• Size has also allowed Square Mile to obtain status as a preferred employer in the industry, so recruiting the highest calibre of staff
• Square Mile is first and foremost a lettings agent which also does sales. This has allowed us to give the proper priority to the obtaining of best quality tenants for landlord clients at the highest possible rents, efficient and effective property management to protect clients’ investments and quality accounting to satisfy client expectations

In 2004 Square Mile acquired MCS Meridian with an extensive portfolio of Middle East based clients. In 2006 Square Mile acquired John Hollingsworth, one of the leading estate agents with offices throughout South West and West London. Established in 1904 John Hollingsworth is also one of the most prestigious local brands in its local market.


Square Mile is currently working on a variety of further acquisitions and is interested in hearing from vendors of residential lettings businesses, ideally with the following characteristics:

• Genuine reason for sale
• More than 100 properties under management
• Sustainable revenue in excess of £250,000 pa
